Valérie La Traverse was appointed vice-president, Corporate Affairs at the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) in November 2021. She is responsible for overseeing corporate policy and strategy, performance, evaluation and audit functions, as well as international engagement.

She joined SSHRC after spending most of her career in the foreign service, most recently as head of the business development  section at the Canadian Consulate in Boston. Valérie also held several key positions at Global Affairs Canada (GAC) working closely with Canada’s science and technology community, serving as science and technology counsellor at the Canadian Embassy in Washington from 2005 to 2010; as deputy and executive director in GAC’s international science, technology and innovation partnerships and agreements group; and as head of policy research and outreach at GAC, where she co-launched the International Policy Ideas Challenge with SSHRC in 2015. She also served as a key member of the secretariat for the Fundamental Science Review in 2016 and one of the first advisors to CSPC when it first started. Earlier in her career, Valérie spent several years at Industry Canada (now ISED) leading technology and innovation initiatives for the Ontario region. She was also executive director of the New England-Canada Business Council for three years in Boston. 

Valérie holds a bachelor’s degree in international relations from McGill University and a master’s in business administration in international business from Concordia University.

Valérie La Traverse a été nommée vice-présidente, Affaires générales, au Conseil de recherches en sciences humaines (CRSH) en novembre 2021. Elle est responsable des politiques, de la stratégie du rendement, de l’évaluation et des fonctions d’audit, ainsi que de l'engagement international.

Elle s’est jointe au CRSH après avoir passé la majeure partie de sa carrière dans le service extérieur, plus récemment à titre de cheffe du développement des affaires au Consulat du Canada à Boston. Valérie a également occupé plusieurs postes clés à Affaires mondiales Canada (AMC), travaillant en étroite collaboration avec la communauté scientifique et technologique du Canada, notamment en tant que conseillère en sciences et technologie à l’Ambassade du Canada à Washington de 2005 à 2010; directrice- adjointe et directrice exécutive des partenariats et des ententes en sciences, de technologie et d’innovation d’AMC; et cheffe de la recherche stratégique et de la sensibilisation à AMC, où elle a cofondé le Concours d’idées de politique internationale avec le CRSH en 2015. Elle a également été un membre clé du secrétariat de l’Examen du soutien fédéral aux sciences en 2016 et l’une des premières conseillères de la SCPC lors de ses débuts. Plus tôt dans sa carrière, Valérie a passé plusieurs années à Industrie Canada (maintenant ISDE) à diriger des initiatives de technologie et d’innovation pour la région de l’Ontario. Elle a également été directrice générale du New England-Canada Business Council pendant trois ans à Boston. 

Valérie est titulaire d’un baccalauréat en relations internationales de l’Université McGill et d’une maîtrise en administration des affaires en commerce international de l’Université Concordia.
